Dennis S. D. Chen, D.D.S., M.S., practices a full scope of periodontics ranging from periodontal (gum) diseases, dental implants, cosmetic periodontal surgeries (gum grafting), crown lengthening, and periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO).
Subtle changes in your smile can project an image of high self-confidence and personal esteem. When you feel good about yourself, it shows.
Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums that gradually eradicate the support of your natural teeth. Periodontal disease damages teeth, gum, and jawbones of more than 80 percent of Americans by the age of 45.
Dental plaque is the primary cause of gum disease in genetically-susceptible individuals. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons that irritate the gums. They may cause redness, swelling, and bleeding. If irritation is prolonged, gums separate from the teeth causing pockets (spaces) to form. Plaque can also harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tartar). This can occur both above and below the gum line.
As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss.
However, don't be fooled. With periodontal disease, bleeding, redness, and swelling are not always present. Further, pain is usually not associated with periodontal disease.
Dental implants are one of the alternatives for the replacement of missing teeth. Dental implants will look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Patients regain the ability to eat virtually any of their favorite foods. You can smile confidently, knowing your implants appear natural and that subtle facial contours have been restored. Dental implants are changing the way people live. Patients are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, and laugh freely.

Procedures include: coverage of long and exposed root surfaces, correction of gummy smiles (esthetic crown lengthening), and gum tissue management for crown and bridges. These procedures prevent future gum recession. For those unhappy with the appearance of short, unsightly teeth, a combination of periodontal procedures by and cosmetic dentistry can greatly improve your teeth's appearance as well as overall health.
